Lessons that teach explicit skills
There is an important place for guided lessons that scaffold students. You build up students' skills using a sequence of small 'skill lessons'/steps in a 50 minutes to hour or more, so they know what to achieve and how to do it. You build in creativity and student voice along the way.

Allow for student ideas and input
From actions as small as students using choosing sticks to make class groups, to students creating clay models as a stimulus to write about the theme of a novel, student voice and creativity is built in.

Changing a lesson to move closer towards students' needs & interests
Both during and after lessons, it is a must to change the direction of a teaching goal or skill you have in mind. Go with the students' needs and interests that arise to maximize motivation, a feeling of inclusivity and clear learning outcomes.
